Understanding Coolant
What is Coolant?
Coolant, also commonly referred to as anti-freeze, is important for a vehicle's everyday function. Coolant is a mixture of two things: glycol, and water. The glycol represents the anti-freeze element in the mix. It helps prevent fluid from icing over in cold temperatures and helps keep engine temperatures stable under extreme climates and driving conditions. Coolant is designed to remove and carry heat away from the engine to the radiator. Once this fluid cools down, it cycles back to the engine to remove more heat. Having the right coolant is critical for drivers traveling long distances in changing climates.Explore Chevron Coolants
Is Anti-freeze the Same Thing as Coolant?
Coolant is a component of anti-freeze. Anti-freeze and coolant perform the same function - to keep the engine from overheating - but there are key differences. First, antifreeze is more concentrated than coolant. Secondly, anti-freeze is primarily used during the cooler months, whereas coolant can be used year-round.
How Often Do You Replace Coolant?
The quality and condition of coolant in an engine should be checked on a regular basis. Most trucks have an overflow reservoir which will help you check the fluid level. By simply looking at this overflow reservoir, you can quickly determine the coolant level. However, a good rule of thumb is to check every 30,000 miles. What Kind of Coolant Should I use?
